Frederic Wertham

Frederic Wertham (1895-1981) was a psychologist interested in protecting children from the damaging influences of mass media culture. He is famous, however, in his opposition to comics and his book “Seduction of the Innocent”,  dedicated to illustrating the dangers of comics as a medium.  For over fifty years the book was widely cited by people protesting the value of comics

Wertham became an important figure in the public distaste for comics, serving as an expert witness on the dangers of comics, writing extensively on the subject, and organizing a symposium.

His collected works and papers are currently available from the Library of Congress.
